Comments about Don Ellis: Thank you Mr. John Vizzusi for doing the documentary of the story which must be told. The first time I heard Don Ellis was in music appreciation class in college in the late 1960's. The music was so different that I immediately followed all his subsequent work. I had the opportunity to see him twice in concert with his latest orchestra at UCLA in Royce Hall. I had no indication he had health problems until I attended the last gig the band played in Century City, Los Angeles.(late 1970's) They announce at the end of the concert that this was last concert due to health reasons. I can't describe the sadness I felt when I learned that the music would end. One of his trumpet players (an older gentlemen who played so high he must of worn an athletic supporter to prevent injuries) gave a short speech and said that Don's music was 40 years ahead of its time. Well, about 40 years have passed and no one is even attempting to extend the his art. The man was truly a genius ahead of his time.
Are you looking forward to this Film? Absolutely, probably multiple times!

Comments about Don Ellis: Don Ellis was one of jazz's true geniuses! I had the incredible good fortune of seeing the Don Ellis Orchestra at the World's Largest Ballroom in Baltimore, MD in the early 70's. He made a profound impact on me and my love and appreciation for music in general, and jazz specifically. I also remember the day when he died. I heard the news when I was driving to a gig over the radio from WMAL talkshow host Bill Mayhew. I couldn't believe the news. I had no idea about his heart condition.
Are you looking forward to this Film? I can't wait to see this documentary!! It's so fantastic that someone would take the initiative to do this! Thank you!

Comments about Don Ellis: I learned of Don Ellis from the first friend I made after moving to California in 1968. I went to see him at the Fillmore West in '69 or '70 by myself because I was so intrigued by his music. He played cuts from Electric Lady and others, and it was surreal to hear his music against the backdrop of a light show and hippies dancing to the sides of the stage. And no, it wasn't enhanced by any external stimuli. I was very straight at the time. Beyond the music, I remember watching Don and Milcho. It was so clear that they were having so much fun. If they were so into it, how could I not be. But the music, too, was mesmerizing. So much in fact that I don't remember the other two bands on the bill. A few years later whilst in college in SF I saw him again at the Great American Music Hall. What a perfect venue to experience his genius. Never before or since have I been carried away so completely by every note, crafted and played so lovingly. The last time I saw him was a year or two later at a restaurant in the Alameda marina. The ambiance of two preceding venues was missing but magical music remained. This time it was special because I was so close to Don and his wonderful orchestra. And it was the last time I saw him. I'm not a musician but I could fully appreciate the beauty in each note he blew. He took me to undiscovered country with his unique tempos, stunning arrangements and beautiful playing. What I liked most was his ability to lift me gently from where I was sitting and transport me through his different movements and tempos only to drop me lightly back where I started when he was done. It was magic.
Are you looking forward to this Film? Absolutely. I've bookmarked the site and will check back next month when the DVD is released.

Comments about Don Ellis: I still remember the first time I heard Chain Reaction as a HS freshman. It is such a moving piece and still brings tears everytime I hear it. Some of my good bandmates studied at Towson State under Hank Levy. There is no better sound in the world than Ellis doing a Levy chart. In my sophomore year, we attempted to play it. It is amazing still today how Ellis made these odd-metered pieces sound like 4/4!

Comments about Don Ellis: I have been a fan of Don Ellis since I was a young(er)trombone player growing up in the 60's. I followed his albums from beginning to end. As far as I am concerned, no other big band has had as much effect on the music scene as his. I've been a fan of Oliver Nelson, Sten Kenton, Woody Herman just to name a few, but Don's band was absolutely the most inovative group ever to hit the jazz circuit. His music is still as fresh today as it was over 30 years ago

Comments about Don Ellis: I started listening to Don's band in the late 60's/early 70's and was absolutely inspired by his unique approach. As much as I was a trumpet player I was more interested in arranging and composing and what he and the members of his band were creating made odd meters fun and natural. some of my friends and I created our own quarter tone alternate fingerings to try and recreate some of the kinds of effects we heard from Don. One of the kids I grew up with was Paul Cacia who later had a chance to play with the band for a short bit and I went on to write arrangements for shows that were using odd metered world music. I would not have had a chance to do some of that were it not for obsessive listening to Don's albums while I was in Jr. High and High School.

Comments about Don Ellis: As a young musician, in the early 70s, I would listen to all trumpet player records I could get my hands on. There was Maynard Ferguson, Bill Chase, of course Miles Davis and later on Kenny Wheeler. But very early on, when I would have some time alone, I would listen for hours on end Don Ellis. There was a fragility, a tense balance if you may, that fascinated me. To this day, when I play in public, AS A PIANIST, Don Ellis remains among my founding AND LASTING influences !

Comments about Don Ellis: A true American original, a genius. Don is one of my musical heroes. Our HS jazz band played Final Analysis at a contest. We also played PWS at basketball games and got the whole gym full of fans clapping n 7/4.The next Year(1974)Don and Band were the guests at a College Jazz Festival where we competed with other Schools from around the State. There were clinics for all of the different section players and the best thing was the afternoon session in front of the bandstand where Don talked about odd meters and such and then burned through Bulgarian Bulge with Milcho and the small group. And of course he played the @#*+ out of the drums too! The most memorable part aside from hearing all of this was seeing the excitement and love this man had for sharing it with all of us. The Soaring album was new and they played some charts from that record at the evening concert. They closed the show with Strawberry Soup and the brass ran out into the crowd. Gil Rathel(Lead Trumpet) was about 10 feet away from us.Don was down in front conducting like a madman.Just an incredible day in my early musical life. I'll never forget it! Thank You John, for bringing Don's art to life in your film.

Comments about Don Ellis: Don Ellis is an extraordinarily gifted musician and visionary; he was ahead of his time. Once you hear his music, you never forget it. He came to Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, to play one of his original pieces in concert with the NAU Symphony Orchestra (@1971). Dr. Kirschbaum conducted the orchestra, and the concert was tape recorded (reel-to-reel). (Through the years I lost the exact name of the piece, and my copy of this recording.) However, I have wonderful memories of performing with this legendary genius, and will always be grateful for this opportunity to have had this experience.

The next year I made 1st chair tenor and we played "Final Analysis", and as a senior we added "Pussy Wiggle Stomp". But perhaps even better than playing his music was the time several of us made the drive to Marin County to listen to the band play! The band was on fire! The Fillmore album was always my favorite, so much so that I bought the CD when it came out in 2006. And thanks to Milcho for keeping his music alive.
Are you looking forward to this Film? ABSOLUTELY! Hopefully it will play in Marin County, but I'm there if it's in San Francisco.

Comments about Don Ellis: Drove through blinding snowstorm from Denver to Evergreen CO in the early seventies to see the Ellis Band in concert ("Tears of Joy" band). The concert was at the Upper Bear Creek Inn (now defunct). Because of the weather, my wife and I were one of maybe six couples in the house. One of the greatest musical experiences of my life. I also went to a symposium Ellis held at Golden (CO) High School the next week. The band went all-out for a bunch of high school kids. Leviev danced to "Bulgarian Bulge." Spectacular and never-to-be-forgotten.
Are you looking forward to this Film? Indeed.

Comments about Don Ellis: As a collector of Ellis vinyl, I would like to say his unique compositions occupy a very special place in my heart and life. I often find myself amazed again and again of the pure genius - the instrumentation, arrangements, musicianship and melodic structures are truly beautiful works of art.
Are you looking forward to this Film? Finally - A film dedicated to exploring one of the most talented and innovative musicians ever! I'm very proud to be involved with the Electric Heart film as AP and AD. It has been (and will continue to be) one of the most important films of my professional life. What fortune! I think EH will create a new interest and appreciation for the music and life of Ellis - and hopefully introduce younger generations of music lovers and youthful musicians to a truly amazing artist.

Comments about Don Ellis: I started listening to Don Ellis in high scholl in 1971, when I was in the jazz band. Our band director was a good friend of Hank Levy from Towson, MD, and our band director introduced us to the odd-metered arrangements of Ellis, Levy, and Kenton. What a great time we listening to and playing some of Ellis' music. I was so glad when Wounded Bird Records began re-releasing Ellis on CD.
Are you looking forward to this Film? I can't wait for the film's release, and hope it will be available for purchase on DVD. Thanks for putting this together!

Comments about Don Ellis: In 1972 Don Ellis and his 22 Piece Electric Jazz Band was the bonus ticket for a music series at Iowa State U. I chose the second of his 2-show concert thinking he might play an encore. It is my regret that I had not chosen the first show. When I arrived the ticket window was mobbed. I mentioned to the ticket taker that I had never heard of the guy but he must be pretty good. His reply, "Those are people from the first performance coming back." My anticipation grew. As I entered the auditorium the crowd was all abuzz. Prior to the show Don Ellis himself stepped out on stage initiating a standing applauuse by many from the audience. He indicated knowledge of returnees and asked what songs they might have the band repeat. Suggesting several titles, a thunderous approval greeted none less than the other. From beginning to end this concert was a roller coaster ride of constant crescendo and dimenuendo of aural emotion. I don't remember if there were 2 or 3 encores, the crowd refused to let him go. It was an experience I'll cherish and never forget. I searched twice for his Tears of Joy album. It took ten years to find the second the first was too scratched to play anymore.
Are you looking forward to this Film? With Great Anticipation!

Never did I so much love and hate a jazz musician at the same time! :) However, putting the pencil and staff paper aside he's certainly on my "dream team" of influences...just an absolute marvel that left us way too young.

Years ago I was on a radio show here in Miami, "Night Train", PBS Sunday nights. I was asked to bring my favorite recordings of people I knew and worked with. Comments about Don Ellis: Well , what to say...in 1968 (I was 14) I heard the music of Don for the first time....it was...well it was and still is the most incredible fantastic music I have ever heard. And there is no such a genius in music for the last century ( and for sure in jazz-music !!!!!) as he is...the Mozart , the Bach of jazz.....!!! Thank God, I've seen him live in Montreux and in the Haque in 1977.... What if ...he was still alive ????? The music of this great GREAT man must never be forgotten...we all have to keep his person and music alive...also for the future. I hope in the near furure there will be a book written by my good friend Ken Orton, living in France .....the BOOK ( Life of Don) and the DVD film are the good works by people who loves Don and his incredible fantastic music! Hans , Groningen , the Netherlands.

Comments about Don Ellis: Just yesterday as I was driving to Wash. D.C. from Canton, Oh., I grabbed a couple of CD's to listen to on the way out the door - and one of them was Tears of Joy. I have been a Don fan for many years and had the opportunity to play with him in the early 70's in Grand Rapids, Michigan where the band would often come to perform. Don was always full of energy and excited to show me his newest chart or sound he discovered with his Oberheim Ring Modulator - his loss was deeply felt by me and I have always missed him dearly. I was pleasantly surprised to find out (through the Maynard website) that you are producing this film.

When we attended the College of The Redwoods Jazz Festival, Doc told us we were about to hear jazz in a way we'd never experienced it before. Innovative, exciting, and powerful. Time signature variations, the latest electronic innovations of the day, and the quartertone trumpet created an unforgettable jazz experience.

Comments about Don Ellis: Having spent a life time in music, principally as a jazz drummer, I was fascinated by Don Ellis, particularly the amazing things he did with time. Who else was playing in 17/8 or 3 and change over 4-time and made it swing? And this was no gimmick. His players were mostly West Coast studio people, I presume, and they could not only read the charts, they sounded comfortable improvising on them. Don Had a distinctive personal trumpet sound and never got enough credit for his playing, in my opinion. I loved his bands and only saw him live a single time. He left us much too soon and took so many mysteries and great music with him. I don't believe anyone has even tried to follow what he did. He contributed to the evolution of jazz and we miss him more than most even realize. What is sad is that I have mentioned Don's name to many members of the jazz organization of which I am the president, and there are only 4 that recognize his name. Until I heard from Richard and Audrey Schwartz very recently, that number was only two!
Are you looking forward to this Film? I honestly cannot wait. There is a crying need to show this great talent and band to the jazz world and I would be proud to screen it for South Florida JAZZ.

Comments about Don Ellis: Sitting here on a Sunday afternoon, looking at what you have done with one of my hero's Don Ellis, I don't know where to begin. I started listening to DE back in 1968 with the album "Electric Lady". I've collected everything that's been aviable to me about Don. And yet as I watched the 5-7 minutes of "Electric Heart" I've seen photo's and a musical selection that I've never heard. I did'nt know about Gunther Schullar's comp. about a Legit Classical player who morphs into a Legit Jazz player. To me, that's Don Ellis. He's that most Frearless, Underrated, Prolific Jazz player of my time. I never tire of listening or talking about him. He died way to early. John, I keep on thanking you for your tireless effort on keeping Don's Music alive.Looking forward to 2007. Michael
Are you looking forward to this Film? Yes, YES,Yes, and Yes!!!!!!!I've been ready since I first found your site. I don't know this for sure, but I think I let you know about the MF web-site and a small but loyal DE base on it. It does'nt matter if it was me or not but it seems that you've found some more DE fans to help you fund your project. At the Church I Pastor, I expose all of our Musicians to anything on your sight or anyother place to show our Music Lovers of Don's genius. The latest one I've shown is the Ed Sullivan Show where Don plays "Concerto for Trumpet" clip. I'm trying to find a whole version of it rather than just the minute version of it. Why? Because I love DE. I'm counting the days untill I can get a copy of it. Please let me know if there is anything i can do to help. Michael
