Comments: Dear Nigel I have been very interested to read about your family history as I and my family live in the house that your family lived in for many years. I have the original deeds that your great grandad signed in 1908.My husband intends to make a plaque for the house renaming it Alvernia. The recent YEP report regards your great uncle John was a nice tribute to a brave man.

Comments: This is a great site Nigel. A great inspiration to many who hold dear the memories of loved ones, who have died and gave us the freedom and benefits we have today. You will know perhaps that Headingley RBL continues to hold a rememberance service at St Michael's and lays wreaths at te Headingley War memorial. It is good that we can connect with the memory of your family on that day.

Comments: A very interesting site. I moved into the Stanks area in 1972 and quite remember the towering chimneys from afar. One day my father took me to the house that stood next to the quarry, passing the massive kilns (2), it was obviously derelict with no ceiling and upper floors. There was a bag on the floor containing 100's of receipts in the name of Chippindale, most had the King George V stamp and the Queen Victoria stamp on them. All documents are dated 1897 and reveal the daily life of the Chippindales, the insurance policy for the newly purchased Vulcan boilers, receipts for kegs of bitter from Tetley's brewery, leather and stirrup items from the local blacksmith, even down to the day red ink was bought to continue with the receipts leaving an accidental red thumb print behind (I assume it is Miranda's print on the receipt). The Chippindales were certainly quite wealthy by late 19th century, owning overseas investments etc.. If you would like I will send you a photograph of one of the receipts along with a photo'd copy of the 1881 census that lists all the family (apart from Henry). I also have a photograph somewhere of Arthur on his horse drawn wagon, apparently on his way to the Corn Exchange.

Comments: An excellent web site and of course the brave men who fought for freedom against tyranny should be well remembered! My daughter is a midwife,so we well understand your son Bailey and also Ben's great and tenacious fight for life. Surely this website could inspire a TV article, since this would be of interest to a wide viewing audience?

Comments: Nigel , I am so grateful to you for the work you have carried out to bring home the debt of gratitude we owe to those who gave their lives in the service of our country and for our freedom. It hardly needs saying that we were very pleased that you came to Scholes to celebrate the granting of the Tree Preservation Order. With the help which you have provided it is our strongest hope that the National Inventory will recognise the desire we have to always and forever remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice

Comments: Found the site whilst surfing for family history information. I have roots with the Maskill family of Barwick in Elmet and surrounding areas. Ironically I used to spend a lot of time in Scholes/Barwick as a teenager without knowing this. Great site. Very much agree with your comments about enjoying the freedom others lost their lives for. Am I deceiving myself or where this years poigniant remembrances more open and sincere?

Comments: Hi Nigel. An interesting and poignant site. it does indeed make such a difference to add a little of the humanity of the fallen to the simple and stark name on a memorial. Mostly young men, cut down as their lives were just starting. As ever, those of their families left behind bore the brunt of the sorrow and loss. A fine tribute, both to the fallen and to your own wee son. Good on you.

Comments: Hi Your web site caught my eye because I lived in Scholes from February 1959 to January 1966. Sub Lt. D. Hockenhull's mother lived in the house next door to us on Leeds Road. She was always very kind and often talked to me over the garden hedge.(I was almost six when we moved there) She moved to the first bungulow after the church on the main street shortly after we moved in. These bungulows were probably new at the time. I would often drop by on the way home from school to say hello. When we left the village she was still there. I had no idea that she had lost a son which was a great shame as we were told at school that our favourite conker trees were planted as a memorial to the fallen of the village. I'm sure it would have brought the sacrifice much closer to home. Still better late as they say. Thank you for your very poignient and thought provoking site-a lovely tribute to your little boy. Regards Lorraine Winson

Comments: I am at a bit of a loss for words, but will try to express the overwhelming gratitude I have experienced right now in finding your site. My name is Tammy Aune Shoaf and I have just received The Ancient Arms of Shoaf from The House of Names. Historians researched ancient and modern documents and discovered the Shoaf surname to have originated from the Anglo-Saxon tribesmen who lived in the Village of Scholes, in the Parish of Barwick, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. I found your site through a Google search, and cannot thank you enough for this incredible and wonderful site remembering our forefathers. Words don't seem enough. Kindest regards, Tammy Shoaf
