My late father joined the Navy just before the start of WW2. I have some photos with snippets of information and a brief written
description of what he did. He mentions training in the Commando Unit in preparation for Sicily invasion in 1943. I would
love to know more as I am compiling a family book using his photographs from this time. I am hoping you can help me. |

Hi Ex RN radio Op 1975-80, but am trying to see if my dad Lewis Hale, JX/165696 who I believe was Combined Ops, may have
been involved with D-Day in some capacity. From 3 Jun 1944 to 10 Aug 1944 he was assigned to HMS Shrapnel, Hendon Unit but
I can find no mention of this unit anywhere. Cheers |

I am trying to find my late Father's war-time history. He was RN beach signals- Dorlin and Québec shown on service records.
I do not know which company he served with but medals show that he was attached to 8th Army - clasp on star- and his history
for Italy was from Sicily, Anzio + Salerno and from there, The Adriatic, Albania, Yugoslavia (Tito's partisans).I have after-action
reports 2 Commando for "Mercerised" and "Healing 2" and some good photographic evidence of an operation somewhere in Albania
1944 of, I presume, some of his company holding a captured German Kreigsmarine flag. Furthermore, I know that one of his mates,
acting P.O. Norris was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for an outstanding piece of work in the same theatre of operation.
I am also trying, without much success I must say, to locate any family members (sons/daughters etc) whose dad's were RN Commandos
in the theatres of op's mentioned. Thank you in anticipation. |

his unit. Did you manage to find personnel records for ratings during your research? |

Hi
Found your website fascinating and so full of information!! We've had our dad's papers back from the Navy Command and they
list all of QUEBEC, COPRA and PEMBROKE IV. His papers state he was a Stoker 1st class but we believe he was in combined
operations - he was awarded 6 medals (1939-45 Star, Alantic Star,Africa Star (with small silver badge saying 8th, Italy Star,
Defence Medal and War Medal). His papers also record HMS BRINDIST, NEMO and 89 flotilla but we can't find any trace of these
vessels/flotilla. Would they be anything to do with combined operations/commando training? Dad is showing as serving on
LCI(L)'s 278 and 281 as well. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks
Ann |

My Dad was Michael King and a Royal Navy Commando. He is in the photograph of G1 Commando on page 161 of 'Beachead Assault'.
He was taken prisoner with John (Jackie)Lennon and George Harrison. An account of their capture appears in 'Only Ghosts Can
Live' by Guy Morgan. I would love to hear from any of John's or George's family members. |

My Dad, Leslie F.M.HENDERSON, RCN Retired, served with the Royal Naval Commandos in North Africa and Sicily, where he was
wounded. He passed away 23 Nov 2010 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, aged 85.
I found his membership cards to The Royal Naval Commando Association and letters from "Jungle Jim". I would be very interested
in hearing from anyone who may have served with Les ('Grannie')in either of those fields of operation. He was attached to
the 80th Flotilla. |
